13/12/07 K.O. 13.30 Cup Match
Broughty win 4-2 on pens

Musselburgh Athletic crashed out of the East of Scotland Cup at the hands of Broughty Athletic from Dundee but manager David McGlynn will be wondering how it happened as Musselburgh played some of their best football of the season. Musselburgh went into the match without the suspended pair of Andy Porteous and Danny Kelly but still fielded a team capable of overcoming their opponents who play in the East Region North division. Musselburgh started well and Chris King was the first to threaten the Broughty goal when he beat three defender in a tight area on the touchline and the home keeper Chris Cargill saved well at his near post. The Martin Murphy tried his luck with a shot from outside the area that went narrowly wide before a Mark Quinn cross found Paul Currie and his header from six yards was goal bound but took a deflection and went for a corner. The match was being dominated by Musselburgh and they were unlucky not to go ahead on thirty-five minutes when Martin Murphy saw a twenty five yard shot rattle of the crossbar with the keeper well beaten. With ten minutes of the half remaining there was controversy when the referee ruled out what looked like a stonewall penalty when Paul Currie was fouled in the box and Broughty broke up field and with really their first chance on goal Mark O’Leary had a shot which was well saved by Ronnie McPherson when he turned the ball round the post and when the corner kick came over Ross Kenny rose unmarked and scored with a header from close range to put the home side ahead. Musselburgh then had Paul Currie and Mark Quinn booked in quick succession both for venting their anger at the decision of the referee not to award the penalty.  Then Ronnie McPherson right on the stroke of half time came to Musselburgh’s rescue when he got down well to save a good strike from James Russell low down to his left.

Into the second half and CJ Osazowa held off two defenders and managed to get a shot in on goal but the keeper was there yet again to thwart him with another block with his legs. Then Musselburgh were fortunate not to fall further behind when Greg Kirk found himself with time and space in the box but he rushed his effort and pushed his shot wide. Musselburgh were still trying to play football and were creating chances and the next one came when Daryl Johnston played a neat chip into the box to find Chris King who back heeled the ball into the path of Paul Currie who shot first time but yet again the keeper was there to save well. On the hour mark Musselburgh sent on Dean Woods for CJ Osazowa but yet again it was Chris Cargill who kept his side in front when he pulled off a fine save this time from a deflected Paul Currie shot that was net bound. Then with fifteen minutes to play Paul Tansey came on to replace Martin Murphy as Musselburgh went for the equaliser and almost immediately they got it when Brian Murray picked the ball up out wide on the right and he cut in and beat two defenders before unleashing a shot from twenty five yards which flew over the keeper and went in off the underside of the crossbar. Despite constant pressure in the closing stages the home side held out with some resolute defending and the tie went to penalty kicks and after Mark Quinn and Chris King had both scored from the spot Chris Cargill saved efforts from Dean Woods and Wes Mitchell to see his side into the next round.
