The Scottish Cup run ended for Musselburgh at Loch Park in a game of few chances both managers should be proud that their tactics were spot on for the game. For Musselburgh again without Turnbull, Woods, Kelly and new signing Scott Devlin, lossing Martin Murphy and Brian Murray during the game caused the visiting management team to show that tactically they can mix it with the best - fair play also to the team for adapting to the many changes.
In fact as early as the tenth minute saw Craig McManus come on for Murphy which after recent performances was a big loss. Paul Tansey looked good and his many runs were causing the Glens defense to treble up on him, but only a few shots wide were the result. Musselburgh did force six corners in the first half but didn't get the breaks in the box. At the other end Danny Sweeney who gets better after every game made a great goal line clearance and with Mitchell, McManus, Bain and Quinn looking solid the visiting keeper was not called into action. Yellow cards for tackles went to Quinn, Sweeney and Doyle for the hosts. The only highlight of the first half was the neat passing and movement of the Burgh midfield. Murray, Tansey and Currie are all growing as a unit and that can only be good for the club.
The second half followed much the same pattern, with both teams unable to break the other. Yellow card though for Gormley but a second yellow for Mark Quinn reduced the visitors to 10 men. Again changes were made with Barnes off and Hawkins on and Musselburgh still looked safe. A free kick well wide was all the hosts managed although a super tackle from Sweeney kept it that way. Sub CJ Osazowa was then introduced after Brian Murray picked up another injury just as he is starting to show what he can do. Finally though the break through did come late in the day and luck played a big part. I thought a throw in should have been awarded to the Burgh and many in the ground shared that view, from that Mark Casey was given the time and space to hit a wicked shot which Ronnie did well to save but following up was top scorer David Gormley with shouts of offside waved away to fire the Glens in front. The referee then looked to have sent Chris King off but the red he held up was replaced with a yellow as either my eyes deceived me or the offical made a mistake. King though was shown a second yellow minutes later followed by the red and Currie collected a yellow as the cards piled up and the Burgh went down to nine. Harsh considering this wasn't a nasty game. The match finished 1-0 with the home team delighted to have got through a tougher game than many would have thought. Can't help feeling that Musselburgh deserved a draw.
It was very dissapointing to see the treatment one of our players received from a section of the home support also the drinking in the stand that these shouts were coming from, I am sure the visitors will have words with the officals about this as these idiots are ruining a very respectable club. Although i have been informed that they haven't been there before, hopefully they will be banned from further games.
In review neither team deserved to win the game with a draw being a fairer result. Tactically Musselburgh did very well to reduce a fantastic super league team to only one shot on goal despite having many injuries and at the end only nine men. I am sure the Burgh faithful have enjoyed the great run in the Cup this year and should be proud that our team has shown skill and fighting spirit against top class teams - Vale Of Clyde, Kelty Hearts, Rob Roy and Glenafton and this should push them on for the rest of the season, hopefully into the Super league. Many thanks to the fans who travelled through and had the team colours proudly on show before and after the game. We wish Glenafton well for the rest of the season. A Note also for the fantastic hospitality and programme provided by Glenafton.
Follow Musselburgh as we head to Fife next week to play another super league team Oakley United. hopefully we will continue our good performances this season winning against Dundonald, Kelty, Rosyth and Montrose when we cross the Forth.
