Musselburgh put in a performance that Jekill and Hyde would have been proud of today; very good first half followed up by a dire second half saw Kinnoull deservidly leave the Burgh with all three points.
The home side got of to a flying start; pinning the visitors back at every opportunity, applying consistant pressure to the Kinnoull defence. Without much delay they were ahead, a poor clearance by Kinnoull from a Burgh throw allowed the home team to make a smart move at the edge of the box, and Paul Currie latched onto the ball and guided it past the 'keeper. More pressure followed from the boys, and some good chances should really have been put away before they got their second. Yet again at this level it was the set piece which provided the opportunity for Danny Kelly to head the ball home.
Then Ross Barnes was unlucky with a first time volley that went narrowly over the crossbar. The visitors had not really threatened in the opening half hour but with five minutes left before the break Musselburgh nearly conceded a goal when Craig McManus was short with a pass back and Gary Davidson intercepted the ball and rounded Ronnie McPherson but took the ball wide and his cross was headed clear by the covering Wes Mitchell for a corner and when the kick came over the ball was met by the unmarked striker Davidson at the back post and he headed home from close range. Then right on half time anther corner was swung over into the Burgh box and the same player had a similar opportunity but headed the ball wide from a yard out. At half time Musselburgh made a switch with Chris King coming on for Ross Barnes as they now had to cope with the wind that was now in the visitors favour. On the hour mark the scores were level when Kinnoull were awarded a penalty kick after a clumsy challenge by Johnny Bain on Jamie Reilly and Robbie Holden stepped up to convert the kick to bring the sides level. Musselburgh then made a substitution with player manager David McGlynn coming on to replace Martin Murphy with Paul Currie dropping back into midfield. Chris King was unlucky when he took a long ball out of defence on to his chest and turned the defender but his shot lacked power and went straight into the arms of the keeper. With fifteen minutes remaining Brian Murray came on for Mark Quinn as both sides went looking for the winner that would give their side three vital league points and with five minutes remaining it was Kinnoull who got the winner. Kinnoull played the ball out of defence and when the cross came in from the right the ball broke kindly to Robbie Holden who looked suspiciously offside but he wasted no time in slotting the ball past the helpless Ronnie McPherson. Musselburgh’s woes were complete two minutes later when Paul Currie was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Craig Milne although it seemed a bit harsh and possibly a yellow would have been suffice.
From that point the game was only going to go one way, although Burgh did improve their defending slighty and Kinnoull should really have taken the initiative earlier and finished the home side off. But it was about ten minutes from time when the inevidable happened and Kinnoull took the lead and that was how it ended. Very dissapointing after such a bright start. Next Saturday Musselburgh are in cup action when they take on Livingston at Olivebank in the Fife and Lothians Cup with a 1.45pm kick off.
