29/12/07 K.O. 13.30 League

EX - players were the difference for Musselburgh as Kenny Munro, Brian Ryrie and Keith Saulton put in man of the match performances for Penicuik who were without main striker Martin Cameron, who was on holiday and goal keeper Billy Bauld, defender Brian Foster keeping goal.

Musselburgh dominated the first half, a Johnston cross was headed over by Paul Tansey. A great chance though for CJ as he rounded Foster but never really looked confident and his shot lacked power and direction and Munro cleared. Then with the best header of the ball taking the free kicks, Tansey swung the ball in and Danny Kelly headed wide. Brian Ryrie was yellow carded for a foul and he had a shot over after good work from Cole. Another free kick fell to Woods who miss-kicked to CJ Osazowa who only just shot wide. Other shots from Darell Johnston (saved), Woods and CJ (wide) all went close. Two good saves from Ronnie McPherson kept the scores level his save from Gay was fantastic. After Ryan Gay was booked for decent Musselburgh had two corners which were cleared by the brilliant Saulton but he could do nothing with half time looming. Foster spilled a Woods shot and CJ Osazowa banged in his 5th goal in Burgh colours. Keep it tight till half time would have been the message but a 50/50 tackle, needless it was and referee Alan Hogg who sent off Andy Portous up at Armadale for a similar tackle, gave Paul Tansey a straight red. Paul Tansey has received 1 yellow card all season and that turned the game without a doubt.

Questionable sub at half time with Johnny Bain coming on to replace Dean Woods with CJ up top on his own. In truth Bain was too far forward to defend and not far enough up to attack.

If Musselburgh ran the first half then Penicuik had the second half with the visitors sitting too far back and with no one providing an outlet up front the ball just kept coming back. It was no surprise when Mark Cowan powered a header into the back of the net to draw the hosts level. Mark Quinn was booked before the free kick was taken. Another poor call from the referee when Martin Murphy chipped the ball over the cuik defense and Danny Kelly slammed the ball in only for it to be called offside. The game was a little more even and after the hour mark Johhny Bain had a weak shot saved and Greame Cole found McPherson with a great drive. Ross Barnes then came on for CJ. A great chance for Musselburgh when Murphy hit the underside of the bar and the resulting scamble just wouldn't fall as Kelly, Barnes and Currie were kept out by Saulton and Foster. With 10 men Brian Ryrie was finding holes in the visitors defense his passing was a joy to watch. Chances towards the end with Ryan Gay heading just wide and Greame Cole hitting over. But again a pass from Ryrie to Cole who passed to sub Montgomery who was clearly offside but no whistle came and a fantastic finish ended Musselburghs promotion chances and goes along way to securing Penicuik for a third season next year in the Premier League. The match ended 2 - 1 with the home team cheered off the park by a large crowd.

In review and to be honest Musselburgh couldn't beat a team without a goal keeper and their top goal scorer who has scored 20 of Penicuiks 53 goals missing. With Keith Saulton proving a rock in the heart of the home defense and Brian Ryrie strolling through the 90 minutes with his craft and skill putting the visitors on the back foot for long spells Penicuik just shaded the game. For Musselburgh bitter dissapointment after missing chances in the first half they can kiss goodbye to super league ambitions. You cant win promotion when your team is constantly reduced to ten men with players out suspended as well. Pass marks only for McPherson, McManus and Mitchell but five star performers Saulton, Ryrie and Gay gave Penicuik who wanted it more, the 3 points.

Follow Musselburgh as they return home with a game against Rosyth at Olivebank with kick off 1.15pm. Musselburgh Football Club would like to thank its supporters for their following in 2007 and look forward to some huge games ahead next year.
